BIOLarry Bob Phillips, born near Amarillo, Texas, studied with calligrapher Carl Kurtz at the Kansas City Art Institute. His primary medium has been drawing for more than ten years and maintains a studio practice that encompasses a wide array of materials and styles. In 2003 he helped start and run the Donkey Gallery in Albuquerque. At the University of New Mexico he began teaching Drawing classes, and continued to teach general studio and art history classes at Central New Mexico Community College, he has also taught in Mexico and Roswell. In 2009 he began a one-year residency at the Roswell Artist in Residence program. Integrating massive stylistic shifts into a cohesive picture, Phillips adds to the landscape of historical picture genres with elements of comics, post-impressionism, calligraphy, graffiti and allusions to computer imaging. The resulting formalism is an eye-jamming potpourri of nostalgic stylization like Bridget Riley remembers Copley and hops on pop. |
